Pep Guardiola expecting tough test against Southampton

Share

The newly-acquired Italian striker is scoring a goal every 70 minutes in the Premier League at the moment.

Pep Guardiola has said that Vincent Kompany is still capable of putting in quality performances and will feature for Manchester City next season as long as he can stay fit.

The Spanish winger has played in an unfamiliar role for City's last three games - away at Arsenal and Chelsea and at home to Hull - but has impressed with his industry down the right-hand side.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has rotated his side to a great extent this season and has used a number of different players as right-backs.

The Belgian partners Nicolas Otamendi at the heart of City's defence as John Stones misses out altogether, while Kevin De Bruyne as well as Fernandinho also return taking the place of Raheem Sterling and Fabian Delph respectively.

"We had that in the Monaco game and we can not forget how good they are after what they did (winning) in Dortmund".

The manager of the world's self-styled wealthiest football club has been in the unusual position of watching the Champions League quarter-finals from a distance this week.

One player who has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer is Sergio Aguero, who was dropped for young Brazilian star Gabriel Jesus earlier in the season, but the Argentinian has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks.

We lived those situations in the Monaco game so we do not forget how good they are.

"Hopefully that experience will help us for next season".

Guardiola seemed to disregard the fact his predecessor Manuel Pellegrini led Man City to the semi-finals, and a narrow loss to Real Madrid, less than 12 months ago. "Now he's involved in the game", Guardiola told a news conference ahead of City's Premier League game against Southampton on Saturday. We created enough chances to score in the first half, but it didn't happen. Maybe now he understands better what we're looking for.

"[His attitude] was always good, from the beginning". Seven games banned because he is so aggressive.

Guardiola expects Kompany to play his part after confirming that the centre-back had been rested against Hull purely as a precaution.
