Wil Myers Hits The Second Cycle In Padres History

San Diego Padres Wil Myers front reacts after swinging and missing a pitch thrown by Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood in the first inning of a baseball game Monday

Eighth inning: There was likely only one chance here - given the inning and the Padres' 4-1 lead at the time - for Myers to come through with the most rare of all four hits needed for a cycle. In this admittedly small sample size, Myers' ground-ball rate has fallen from 44.7% last year to just 35.7% this year, resulting in an increase in his line drive rate (21.4% to 25.0%) and fly-ball rate (33.9% to 39.3%). Greg Holland earned his major-league-leading fifth save as the Rockies improved to 4-0 in one-run games.

After a being a highly regarded prospect - with Tampa Bay - and having a couple of disappointing seasons, Myers hit 28 homers and was worth 3.8 WAR (per FanGraphs) in 2016 for the Padres.

"We had a lot of trouble laying off the high fastball", Padres manager Andy Green explained.

There's nothing wrong with celebrating a no-hitter in which the pitcher gets away with three or four mistake pitches resulting in pop ups rather than home runs.

As for the offense, the Rockies were bolstered by three solo homers — with Nolan Arenado's shot to right off reliever Miguel Diaz (1-1) in the seventh putting them ahead for good. He gave up five runs and four hits with five walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. The 26 year old first baseman is now credited with the first cycle of 2017.

"Guys are going to get on base", Cosart said.

"Obviously, a couple of bad pitches cost me", Weaver said. In the sixth, Blackmon belted Weaver's 78 miles per hour slider into the fountains beyond the center-field wall, tying the game 2-2. Gonzalez's first homer of the season exited in a hurry, landing in the seats above the manual scoreboard in right field. Cahill, who was put on the DL retroactive to April 6, could make his next scheduled start.

"It's been quality at-bat after quality at-bat", Green said.

Rockies: C Tom Murphy had a scan on his broken right forearm Tuesday. OF David Dahl (ribs) is playing catch, throwing and running.

"There's a different feeling he had that day that he'll never have again", Black said.

"It occasionally cut back and would find a barrel", Freeland said. "We'll find another way to be intimidating". Jake Esch, who the Padres claimed off waivers from the Marlins at the end of March, will be recalled from Double-A San Antonio to fill Perdomo's roster spot. Counting Monday's homer, LeMahieu had hit for the cycle in his last five at-bats, including Sunday's game.
