Substitutes rescue Liverpool against Stoke City

The Brazilian completed the comeback

Jurgen Klopp spoke of his happiness for Simon Mignolet after the goalkeeper's world-class saves helped Liverpool to win 2-1 at Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

It was an inspired move by Klopp as Coutinho ultimately equalised before Firmino secured all three points moments later but things could have turned out differently.

The Reds remain in third, nine points clear of fifth-placed Arsenal, who have three games in hand.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes believed his side were hard done by after a fourth straight defeat.

"We needed to fight and Simon Mignolet made two outstanding saves - the second one was one of the best I've ever seen, it was save of the day, the month and the year", he said.

With Liverpool trailing to a Jonathan Walters header at halftime, the Brazilian duo emerged from the reserves to score within two minutes of each other.

But, if Coutinho seemed as though he was off his game, perhaps it was due to the significant toll his sickness had taken on him.

There were just 126 seconds between Liverpool's first and second goals against Stoke City.

It is against the clubs lower in the league where The Reds have struggled and where their pressing tactics are nullified.

Jurgen Klopp's approach to start with teenagers Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold in a 3-5-2 formation didn't quite work out as he had hoped but certainly marked a fearless approach that deserves respect.

Having snatched up Luis Suarez from Anfield in 2014, Barcelona could return to try and nab Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho in the summer - he is thought to be a prime target for the Catalan giants.

Liverpool are now in third place with 62 points after 32 games.

A minute later, Firmino's fierce first-time effort was superbly palmed over by Lee Grant.

Liverpool went even closer on the hour when Dejan Lovren's towering header from Coutinho's corner hit the top of the bar and went over. It was not a plan to change twice at half-time but if you start them, we would still have to.

Coutinho drilled into the bottom corner in the 70th minute to equalise after a poor clearance from Johnson.

The Potters nearly fought back, however, with Simon Mignolet producing a superb save to thwart Saido Berahino.
