Was McDonald's Twitter Hacked, Or Has it Gone Rogue?

"Obviously McDonalds didn't purposely send a tweet that referred to Donald Trump's tiny hands, so everyone figured it was either a hack or an employee gone rogue", she says. After clinching the 1,237 delegates needed to win the Republican presidential nomination in May, Trump posted a photo of himself with McDonald's fries and an uneaten burger while riding on his airplane. Ergo, it's unclear whether the account was hacked or if the company's social media manager simply saw a golden opportunity and ran with it.

The hacking comes just one day after hundreds of Twitter accounts including Justin Bieber's and Forbes were hacked.

The company was notified by Twitter that its account had been "compromised", McDonald's said, adding that it is now investigating the hack.

The tweet was sent at 9.16am EST (eastern standard time) and remained live for around 15 minutes. Twitter Inc allows for two-factor authentication, a security feature that would deter many attempts to seize an account.

Trump, interestingly, is one of the more fast-food friendly United States presidents in recent years, and is also known to be a prolific Twitter user. Whoever tweeted it really wanted to make sure that a lot of people saw it, which is why it was the "pinned tweet" for this account Thursday morning before it was deleted.

Donald Trump loves fast food, but does it love him back? He also appeared in a commercial for the Golden Arches alongside its character Grimace more than a decade ago.

In a statement to CBS MoneyWatch, McDonald's said, "Twitter notified us that our account was compromised".

He echoed those comments after Trump was elected, noting that uncertainty was likely to continue throughout Trump's transition. Easterbrook also supported Andrew Puzder, Trump's first pick for the Secretary of Labor.
