The droves of MI fans at Bankers Life Fieldhouse held their collective breath, waiting to see how their team would respond out of the break.

It is the first time the Fieldhouse is hosting any NCAA tournament games. The game is evolving into this.

Oh, you didn't know that Northwestern was one of five teams to have never made the NCAA tournament? Jimmy King chipped in 15 points and was 3-5 from beyond the arc.

Defense is supposed to win championships, and it still might win this one in the end. No. 9 seed line in the NCAA Tournament. Their all time tournament record stands at 52-25 (45-21 after sanctions).

So Friday's shootout was a seminar on what modern offense can be, efficient and powerful, and risky from long range. MI had only four. Can they fire it back up or have they already won their Super Bowl?

A 12-4 MI run allowed the Wolverines to keep the Cowboys at a short arm-length distance.

The Wolverines Derrick Walton Jr. was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Big Ten tournament after averaging over 20 points and six assists per game in Michigan's four wins. Miami has a strong defensive team that should make it tough for these freshmen to get good looks at the basket. He finished with 16 points on 6-11 shooting and four assists. Only problem was, the Bruins scored 102. The scoring comes from a balance of players, with D.J. Wilson, Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, Walton Jr., and Zak Irvin all having the ability to light up the scoreboard.

They aren't finished yet after making 16 3-pointers - including 11 of 15 in the second half - to outpace the 10th-seeded Cowboys (20-13). Oklahoma State opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 52-46 lead, but a 14-4 run by MI would give the Wolverines a 76-68 advantage with 6:47 remaining.

The second half saw just four combined turnovers between the teams - each with two. The Wolverines made 11.

Sparty started the year at #12 in the country but lost their first two games. Early in the game, we settled way too much.

"I don't think we're going to get fooled by the fact that their pace of play - as the numbers show - is pretty slow", Underwood said.
