Ex-labor secretary Tom Perez elected DNC chair

Supporters rally for Rep. Keith Ellison D-Minn. ahead of the DNC vote for chair

He was lobbying voting members right outside the door of the meeting hall Saturday morning. While former President Barack Obama has stayed out of the race, Perez has been endorsed by close Obama allies like former Vice President Joe Biden and former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Wasserman Schultz resigned amid fallout from hacks into the DNC, which the US intelligence community eventually concluded was part of a campaign ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin for his government to interfere in the 2016 election and help sway its outcome in favor of Donald Trump.

But Perez understood something very important: The Democratic establishment still has lots and lots of power within the party committees.

Republicans occupy the White House, run both chambers of Congress and control about two-thirds of USA statehouses.

"We don't have the luxury to walk out of this room divided", he said.

In his speech to DNC voters before the voting, Perez said that all Democrats would leave united and that Democrats are the party of inclusion in every zip code.

Both final candidates had promised major efforts to rebuild party infrastructure at local and state level that withered across the US despite former president Barack Obama's personal ratings.

Others seeking the position are Idaho Democratic Party executive director Sally Boynton Brown.

The party had been facing a "crisis of confidence", he told 427 eligible party delegates Saturday.

And so far, Democratic leaders said, people are calling local party headquarters and volunteering to help.

Former Labor Secretary Tom Perez on Saturday was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee, defeating top-rival Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, in their respective bids to chart the direction of the national party.

That increases the likelihood that former Labor Secretary Tom Perez or Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison could win the job without a marathon voting session. Progressive activists said the outcome would be representative of their standing within the party.

Bronx Assemblyman Michael Blake, who is also running for one of the four vice chair slots, talks about "building the party's bench" by helping Democratic candidates for city councils and school boards, while simultaneously working hard to engage young people in the work of the party. Rob Taub, Democratic strategist and contributor to Huffington Post, and Scottie Nell Hughes, national spokesperson for Freedom Vine, join "News with Ed" to offer their reactions to what Bannon and Priebus had to say.

Perez is the son of Dominican immigrants, while Ellison is the first Muslim elected to the US Congress.

"Keith's long history as an organizer who can energize the grassroots makes him the best choice to lead our party during this critical time", he said.

"I want to thank my competitors for their graciousness beginning the day I got into this race - proving what unites us is greater than our divisions", Buttigeig said. Wasserman Schultz had been forced to resign as DNC chair after emails released by WikiLeaks revealed her plotting against Sanders, sparking a massive outcry.
