Trump signed an executive order last month calling for construction to begin on the border wall, a signature campaign promise that he has vowed Mexico will pay for - even as the Republican-controlled Congress makes plans to initially fund the wall with US tax money.

Videgaray said in a television interview that Mexican consulates in the USA have received three times as many phone calls from citizens there as before the U.S. election in November, after Trump promised during his campaign to deport millions of undocumented migrants.

The protesters also heaped scorn on their own president Enrique Pena Nieto, calling him a weak leader who has presided over rampant corruption and violence in the country, the Reuters reported.

Protesters in Mexico City shouted slogans saying "Long Live Mexico, Down with Trump".

Tens of thousands of Mexicans took to the streets on Sunday in order to protest against US President Donald Trump.
