Donald Trump to "design or negotiate" cheaper option for Mexico border wall

Trump signed an executive order last month calling for construction to begin on the border wall, a signature campaign promise that he has vowed Mexico will pay for - even as the Republican-controlled Congress makes plans to initially fund the wall with US tax money.

Numerous marchers were dressed in white as a sign of unity.

Videgaray said in a television interview that Mexican consulates in the USA have received three times as many phone calls from citizens there as before the U.S. election in November, after Trump promised during his campaign to deport millions of undocumented migrants.

The protesters also heaped scorn on their own president Enrique Pena Nieto, calling him a weak leader who has presided over rampant corruption and violence in the country, the Reuters reported.

The 650 miles of fencing already in place along the border came at a price of $7 billion (£5.6 billion), and Trump's plans involve extending the barrier through mountainous terrain, which would be more expensive.

Trump has also wrought havoc on the Mexican economy with his threats to terminate the country's privileged trade relationship with the United States, blaming Mexico for the loss of American jobs.

"We want bridges not walls", one protestor's sign read.

Protesters in Mexico City shouted slogans saying "Long Live Mexico, Down with Trump".

Tens of thousands of Mexicans took to the streets on Sunday in order to protest against US President Donald Trump.

"It is time we citizens combine forces and unite our voices to show our indignation and rejection of President Trump, while contributing to the search for concrete solutions", said the coalition behind the marches.

According to a poll, 80% of Mexicans believe that the U.S.

Kellyanne Conway, top adviser to President Donald Trump stated that Trump expects Mexico to pay for the wall.
